Whether placed around the neck of a victorious athlete or held in the hands of one who has found a better way to peace or who has made a discovery that will change our world—the medallion is a powerful symbol. But, it doesn’t simply represent and bestow respect upon the achievement itself. It also recognizes the journey taken. The challenges faced. The obstacles overcome. And the character built from the fires of experience.

For those within the therapeutic area of oncology—from providers, to patients, to caretakers, to pharmaceutical companies—there is no easy path to take. It’s always about forging whatever path is needed to get to the best outcome.  It takes untold diligence to fight. It takes unrelenting courage to explore the unknown. And it takes unfathomable strength to push ahead—even when it would be easier to simply give in and give up. It is this level of effort that is just as worthy of recognition, of respect, of our collective awe as any feat achieved by an athlete or academic or policymaker.  The medallion belongs to them. Not because it’s expected or assumed. But because it has been made by them—and earned by them—at every point along the journey.
